DECLARATION OF ARTISTS

Welcome everybody. We condemn the mainstream media censorship of the resistance in Gezi park. We, as the filmmakers, artists and writers of this country, say to Turkey's own prominent and nonpartisan media organisations-above all, to NTV, CNN Turk, HaberTurk, Kanal D, ATV, Stad, Show TV, and TRT, all mainstream television channels, and primarily some newspapers of Stad, Sabah and HaberTurk-that we condemn their disregard for the principles of objective reporting, their censorship and side-taking regarding the process that has begun at Gezi park.

The resistance at Gezi Park and the protests taking place in every corner of the country, consolidating their existence against order and oppression with each passing day as symbols of awakening in Turkey and the world, are not linked to any one political party, and are movements that draw strength from the people's common knowledge. Completely within a peaceful framework, the participants in these movements, with common purpose, and with urban and environmental consciousness, lay claim to the right to live in freedom in the territory they live in.

We have watched with astonishment and sorrow as publications in the mainstream media organisations have published on both this movement and the oppression the police have deployed against it, on occasion with deadly intent and in an aggressive and provocative manner, in a way that has ceded to or sought to avoid offending the powers of politics and capital. However, the media's attitude of denial, as we have seen, will benefit no one else but those who aim to underestimate the resistance or try to bastardize its aims in Turkey or the world.

We invite the interested publishing organisations to renounce this negligence of the history we now found ourselves in, to publish objective news stories, and to find its contribution as a democratic and free media formation. In this actual and historical process, an independent media will provide for all of us a secure freedom. For ourselves, we will continue to witness this process. (cheering)
