Citizens have been protesting democratically all over the country particularly in Taksim Istanbul; due to the police violence carried out by the government against the collective sensitivity after the attempt to demolish Taksim Gezi Parki at around 22:00 on 27 May 2013. First of all, we share deceased Abdullah Comert's and Mehmet Ayvalitas's families' sorrow and would like to wish thousands of our injured citizens a fast recovery.
Unfortunately, in spite of public's expression of democracy- and human rights-based requests in democratic and peaceful ways, government continues its repressive and violent policies.
It should be known that we are working hard towards a climate where none of our citizens is injured, the tension is eliminated and democratic requests can be voiced.
For the aforementioned reasons, as Taksim Platform, we expect concrete actions by the government very soon on the requests listed below:
- Gezi Parki must stay as a park. There must be an official announcement that the project is canceled, there will be no construction, Topcu Kislasi or otherwise, and Ataturk Kultur Merkezi demolition is stopped.
- Along with Istanbul, Ankara, Hatay governors and head of police departments, everybody responsible of the deaths of 2 citizens, injuries of thousands of people by giving orders to repress or prevent expression of basic democratic rights beginning with the opposition to Taksim Gezi Park demolition, must be fired. Gaz bombs and similar material usage should be banned.
- All citizens across the nation who are under arrest due to their participation in opposition must be immediately released and there must be an announcement that there will be no further investigation against them
- Obstacles on freedom of speech and bans on meetings, demonstrations, activities in Kizilay, 1 Mayis square, Taksim and all squares and public spaces in Turkey must be eliminated
Additionally, officials should recognize the expectations, requests, spirit and content of the protest movement that grew in all public squares, streets, avenues in the nation since 22:00 on May 27, 2013. Trying to explain what happened with "marginalism" is just a sign of ignorance. Government's approach, which already has been symbolized with the interference to Gezi Park, is perceived to be a direct interference to citizen's life styles and beliefs and there is a broad-based reaction to this by women, men, youth, elderly and they clearly say that they exist, they are there and they have requests.
We'd like to remind the government that the content of this growing reaction starts with the 3rd bridge, 3rd airport, Canal Istanbul, Ataturk Forest Ranch, hydro power plants which result in destruction our ecologic values, continue more recently with the objection to the draft legislation on protecting the nature and biological diversity as well as the request for peace and standing against the war policies in our country and in the region, rightful requests of the victims of urbanization, the sensitivities of our Alevi citizens, the voice against the conservative paternalistic policies that try to control women's bodies, the resistance to the repression of judges and artists, the movement against all sexual orientation and sexual identity discrimination, the request to eliminate any theft of blue collar rights and the request to eliminate all obstacles in front of citizen's access to all education and healthcare rights.
