Brain Death of Ethem Sarısülük Occurred, The Police who shot him is “unknown”
The brain death of Ethem Sarısülük, who was shot on the head by police during Ankara Gezi protests, has occurred. Police department refuses to declare the identity of the police officer to district attorney’s office.
Doctor of Ethem Sarısülük who got heavily wounded due to gunshot to the head on June 1st during Ankara resistance, declared that his brain death has occurred this morning.
His lawyer said that, the identity of the police officer who shot Sarısülük has still not been declared to district attorney’s office and that tomorrow they are going to file charges together with Çağdaş Hukukçular Derneği (ÇHD, Progressive Lawyers Association), against all those who protect the police officer including the Ankara Chief of Police and Governor of Ankara.
Lawyer Bayraktar said “According to his doctor he can be pronounced dead any minute now”.
“It is obvious how the event has happened”
Lawyer Bayraktar said “The moment of the event is clearly visible on footages, also eye witnesses described what happened on exploratory investigation. The fact that, this police officer didn’t find himself between the protesters by accident and fired to save himself, but that he voluntarily went near the protestors and kicked people, is clear on MOBESE camera footage”.
What happened?
On June 1st, during the protests held in Ankara to support the Gezi resistance, OSTIM laborer Ethem Sarısülük age 27 was shot on the head by police fire. He was transported to Numune Hospital as heavily wounded.
On June 6th, exploratory investigation was conducted on crime scene.
On June 10th, MOBESE camera footage surfaced. On footage it is seen that riot police opens fire, then Ethem Sarısülük collapses.
Polices who keep firing tear gas to the location where Sarısülük lies, notices that he was wounded only through friends of him telling this.

Lawyer Bayraktar said, “It is clearly obvious that there is a police officer who fires a gun, both eye witnesses and camera footage show this. According to footage this particular police officer drops his shield to ground, dashes near the protestors, kicks them and retreats while firing. He does all this on clear sight of his chief officer.”
“Guns and ammo are distributed to police officers with a chain of custody; a gun and ammo used on an event are identified after the event and recorded to document of custody. The police officer who opens fire is known.”
District Attorney Veli Dalgalı who is conducting the investigation has written a document to police department requesting them to report the identity of this police officer. But as of 11th day of event, police department still hasn’t answered back to DA.
